 SUBIC BAY TO BORACAY RACE

 19-21 February 2010

 BORACAY CUP

(Keelboats and Beach Catamarans)

22 – 27 February 2010

The Boracay International RegattaCommittee and the Philippine Sailing Association are please to announce thattwo major Philippine sailing events will take place in February 2010.

The Subic to Boracay Race is a 200 mile offshore race which providesmany different conditions over the course. This year for the first time thecompetitors will be able to choose one of two different routes. This will taxthe tacticians and weather forecasters as each boat has to choose which waythey think is the fastest to sail from Subic Bay to Boracay Island. Some maychoose the route west of Mindoro in the hope of avoiding an area of usually lightwinds found to the North East of Mondoro. Other may choose to face the windwardbeat up the notorious Verde Island Passage risking the light wind area andhoping for an eventual fast reach into Boracay.

The teams will gather forpreparations, safety inspections and briefing at Subic Bay Yacht Club on Friday19 February. At midday on Saturday the starting gun will sound and the boatswill be on their way.

Frank Pong of Hong Kong with hisrecord holding boat, Jelik, will be returning to attempt to beat that recordand hold off the small boats in the handicap racing event. Many boats from HongKong and Singapore are expected to join the local fleet for the race.

The jewel in the crown awaits theteams as they arrive in Boracay for a short rest and much recreation before thestart of the Boracay Cup, withracing from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 27 February. The Boracay Cup features 2days with short offshore races around Boracay and nearby islands of 25 to 35miles and two days of windward leeward races over a 2 mile long course, withexciting close quarter encounters.

Boracay has quite rightly earned a reputation over the last 4 years for being a great venue for exciting andchallenging keelboat and Hobie racing at the highest international level andfor providing the ideal location for the sailors and supporters to enjoy the“party that is Boracay” between races

This year for the first time Beach Catamarans, that have been competing in the West Pacific HobieChampionships in Boracay during the Subic to Boracay Race, will take part inthis event enjoying the longer offshore races.

The events are sponsored andsupported by the Department of Tourism.
